ONCE AGAIN THIS YEAR, LEADERS ARE STANDING OUT

September 23, 2024

Dear Participants,

We are quickly approaching our recognition event, which marks the end of another year for the BEC…

Every year, the state of the real estate sector in terms of energy management and decarbonization improves, and participant engagement continues to grow. Today, leadership is also exercised at higher levels within organizations. Real estate asset management is now taking responsible charge of energy management and decarbonization. ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) standards are being progressively implemented and setting the tone for new norms.

Corporate challenges related to this transformation now manifest as both financial and non-financial risks. Regulations and the market are adapting, and it’s clear that turning back is no longer an option.

The upcoming challenges won’t just be technical but will reside in execution. The pressure will be high. Are we ready? According to our BEC 2022-2023 report, we still have a long way to go. This report highlights the critical importance of the quality of energy data to make the right decisions. Data mastery and accuracy are essential, both for public authorities, who need to steer energy supply, costs, and services toward societal objectives, and for real estate companies and managers, who must make strategic decisions on decarbonization and plan efforts accordingly.

Currently, we see that decisions at all levels must be made while considering uncertainties in the energy landscape, whether local, national, or international. You are all facing the same realities:

  • What will energy rates look like in the short and long term?
  • What will our capacities for renewable energy supply and distribution (nuclear, wind, solar, hydrogen, etc.) be?
  • How can we manage the interplay between economic growth and energy management?
  • Will we be able to implement all energy transition projects? Should we prevent impacts or endure them?

This list of questions could easily grow longer.

However, we are also seeing some converging solutions. Data mastery and the awareness of asset managers about financial and non-financial impacts are essential starting points. The rest will become clearer through the uncertainties shaping our reality.

The real estate sector must continue to take charge and share the right information to guide you in your decisions. Overcoming uncertainties will lead us to greater clarity and predictability.

The BEC plays a crucial role in this effort. Once again this year, we see leaders stepping up and taking action. It’s time to recognize and applaud their proactivity.

BOMA Québec’s 2024 Building Energy Rendezvous will take place on October 15 in Montreal. This event brings together real estate industry leaders to discuss energy challenges and decarbonization solutions. The day will begin with the “Generations 1.5°C” conference, which will explore ways to improve building profitability through efficient energy management. The event will conclude with the BEC Recognition Awards ceremony, followed by a networking cocktail.

Reserve your spot today. We look forward to seeing many of you, as at every edition.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
